The Decorative Arts

The Joanna Bird Foundation’s first project, in 2013, was a touring exhibition, Marking the line: Ceramics and Architecture. This exhibition commissioned four ceramic artists to respond to Sir John Soane’s life and work. The contemporary installations by Christie Brown, Carina Ciscato, Nicholas Rena and Clare Twomey were curated in historic settings of Soane’s architecture. The exhibition opened at Sir John Soane’s Museum and toured to Port Eliot, Cornwall and Pitzhanger Manor, Ealing.

A symposium at Somerset House concluded the concept and the tour.

A film on the life of potter Richard Batterham was completed in 2017, a DVD was also produced. Since then, Richard sadly passed away this year. An edited version of this film is now showing at the V&A’s exhibition on Richard Batterham’s life as a studio potter.

About the Foundation

The Joanna Bird Foundation was established in 2012 with a mission to raise awareness of the Decorative Arts; by developing projects focusing on education and by exploring new concepts within the wider field of the Arts.

Our projects aim to discover opportunities for young artists to benefit from the experience of established artists, both by developing their work and documenting their practice for future reference.

The Foundation encourages artists from a variety of disciplines to share knowledge and experience. Their collaborative work culminates in exhibitions, seminars, lectures, films and publications.
