Having trained under masters who defined twentieth-century British ceramics, including Michael Cardew, Michael O’Brien and Alan Caiger–Smith, Miranda Thomas has built a reputation as one of the world’s leading ceramic artists. Settling in Vermont, she has founded the prestigious workshop, ShackletonThomas, alongside her husband Charles Shackleton.
Miranda’s pieces, decorated with designs inspired by the magic of the natural world, have been given as diplomatic gifts by Presidents Clinton, Obama and Biden and by the United Nations. They have been given to dignitaries including UN Secretaries-General Kofi Annan and Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, and Popes John Paul II and Francis.
Joanna Bird Gallery is the only UK stockist of Miranda’s work, and we were delighted to welcome her for this rare talk. In it, she discusses what she learnt from her great teachers and takes us through the development of her style, giving a demonstration of her research into the traditional scroll design.
